The Raisin Valley Land Trust
The RVLT is a local, private, non-profit, corporation dedicated
to the preservation of natural areas and farmland in the River
Raisin watershed. Founded in 1992, we rely on donations of
time, money, conservation easements and property to meet our
goals. We also participate in local efforts aimed at maintaining
our rural communities.
The RVLT is recognized by the State of Michigan and the IRS
as a non-profit, tax exempt organization.
The RVLT offers individual landowners a legal, voluntary
and independent way to control land development. The donation
of property or conservation easements to the RVLT guarantees
valuable natural and historic resources are preserved for
future generations.
The RVLT's board is made up of residents from communities
within the River Raisin watershed, and assumes guardianship
of easements and properties donated to the RVLT.
For more information about easements visit the Little
Traverse Conservancy. This easement is based on the the
2000 Michigan model conservation easement kept there.
MIS supports RVLT and the 319 grant
On December 7th, board
members Sybil Kolon and Woody Kellum attended a ceremony
to receive a generous gift of $3,003 from Michigan International
Speedway (MIS) on behalf of RVLT. The award will help
provide private match dollars for our 319 grant, and
will support our efforts to seek conservation easements
of important lands in the Goose Creek sub-watershed of the
River Raisin. RVLT is expanding our efforts in the Goose
Creek area to reach new constituency and protect the source
of the river, among other things (see “Our path forward” on page 6
of this newsletter). We thank MIS for their contributions,
and hope that this will be the first step in a lasting relationship,
and that their leadership may inspire other area businesses
to step up and help RVLT in “Savin’ the Raisin.”
