I-73 Status Report

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is on the verge of selecting a consultant to perform the corridor study for the proposed I-73 expressway between Toledo and Jackson. The RVLT is committed to following this news as it develops in hopes of fostering constructive dialogue and avoiding a rush to judgment. We feel that it is important for area residents to take an active interest in the planning process.

MDOT has selected four finalists from six firms submitting proposals. The consulting work is to cover traffic modeling, environmental study and public involvement. Oral presentations by the four finalists will be made at a meeting in early May, where an MDOT selection committee can ask questions and will likely make a selection. Once the selection is made, it is expected to take six weeks for the state to approve the work contract. By mid-summer, we should start hearing and reading about public meetings in the Lenawee, Jackson, and Monroe areas. MDOT’s request for proposals calls for the consulting firm to maintain a web page on the project as well as a toll free phone number and a newsletter to keep area residents abreast of activity.
