Woodland Wildflowers Take Center Stage

If you have a chance before spring is much further along (until at least mid-May), stop by the Nature Conservancy’s Nan Weston Preserve at Sharon Hollow, Washtenaw County. This 248-acre preserve is one of the most botanically rich natural areas in southeastern Michigan. Hepatica, squirrel corn, Dutchmen’s breeches, bloodwort and trillium carpet the forest floor. Over 260 species of plants have been identified.

This preserve is a prime example of what a focused effort can accomplish. The Nature Conservancy had long recognized this area as a key habitat for many exceptional plant and animal species and acquired the first 22 acres in the early 1980’s. Over ten years went by before a deal was made for an additional 216 acres. This unique ecosystem is open to the public for hiking and nature appreciation. From M-52 at Pleasant Lake Road (flashing light north of Manchester) go west on Pleasant Lake three miles to Sharon Hollow. See map.
