Sand Lake Channel Easement FinalizedA conservation easement on a small, but potentially significant, piece of property on the Sand Lake channel, has recently been accepted by the RVLT board. The property is long and narrow, and less than an acre. Part of its surface is a private road and a portion is submerged beneath the channel. The rest could be called bottom lands, with large cottonwoods, some smaller elms, black cherries, shrubs and other wetland species. The RVLT board is actively working to obtain easements on Sand Lake. Though this parcel has no lake frontage, the channel does offer potential access to the lake. The easement does not allow current or future property owners to erect structures, which effectively limits the use of this property for access to the lake. The channel was constructed in the 1940s to stabilize the level of Sand Lake in relation to Wampler’s Lake. Sand Lake is in a small bowl with its very own watershed. Anything that goes on within a short distance of the lake shore has an impact on its water quality. The RVLT board hopes the channel easement will be a spark for future easements in the Sand Lake area, further protecting and enhancing the quality of the lake. | Contents
