Pulling Together - Pulling Garlic Mustard

Anyone who has seen Michigan in the spring is familiar with the beautiful woodland wildflowers that bloom at this time. They make for amazing scenery as the sun stays in the sky a bit longer each day.

Unfortunately, if you have seen the beauty of Michigan’s wildflowers, you also know of the garlic mustard infestation. Garlic mustard is an invasive species that stands out with its ability to overwhelm natural habitats in only a few years. Not only has garlic mustard overrun our trilliums and wild geraniums, it has also affected tree growth and the animals that depend on native plants.

The Stewardship Network Clusters are working to remove 100,000 pounds of garlic mustard this spring. With your help, we can reach and exceed this goal. Volunteers from each of the five clusters will remove garlic mustard from April 9 through May 31. The cluster that pulls the most garlic mustard will win the Stewardship Network’s Golden Hotdog Award, recognizing the cluster with the most “mustard.”

Anyone can do it. Join a cluster garlic mustard pull at your favorite park or natural area by going to www.stewardshipnetwork.org/garlicevents to find a pull near you. Or you can pull from your own yard. After you have removed the garlic mustard and properly bagged it, go to www.stewardshipnetwork.org/garlicchallenge and report how many bags you pulled. To reach our goal we need your help. Every bag counts, so be sure to report your pullings.
