Washtenaw County Natural Areas Preservation Program up for Renewal

In the ten years of its existence, Washtenaw County’s Natural Areas Preservation Program (NAPP) has protected over 1800 acres of land that provide valuable habitat for wildlife, and low-impact recreation for people. The millage that funds the program will end in December of this year unless the voters of Washtenaw County renew it in November. Among the properties purchased are three along the River Raisin that total 428 acres and over a mile and a half of river frontage. The renewal (not an increase) is for a quarter mill, which amounts to $25 per year for a home with a market value of $200,000.

This is a small price to pay for a program that preserves beautiful scenery, wildlife, and places for a peaceful walk in a natural setting. In May the RVLT board passed a resolution urging the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners to place a proposal on the November 2010 ballot to renew the existing 10 year, one-quarter millage which funds the NAPP.
